Position Overview: 7–12th Grade English Teacher

Mystic Valley is seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable English Teacher to deliver engaging, literature-based instruction to students in grades 7–12. The teacher will implement the Core Knowledge curriculum and the Great Books program, with potential assignments in the school’s prestigious International Baccalaureate (IB) program at the high school level. This role is ideal for an educator who is passionate about classical literature, analytical writing, and helping students develop a lifelong appreciation for language and critical thinking.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver daily instruction based on the Core Knowledge Sequence, Great Books methodology, and, if applicable, the IB curriculum

  • Develop and teach five subject-area classes, each meeting daily

  • Create and implement lesson plans with clear, measurable learning objectives

  • Monitor and assess student progress regularly through quizzes, essays, projects, and formal evaluations

  • Issue timely and accurate progress reports and report cards in accordance with school policy

  • Prepare and administer standardized tests as directed by the English Department Chair and Leadership Team

  • Collaborate weekly with English department colleagues to align curriculum, refine instructional practices, analyze data, and share best practices

  • Enforce school-wide behavior expectations using the assertive discipline model

  • Attend all faculty meetings and required professional development sessions

  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the English Department Chair and/or Assistant Director

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in English or a closely related field (Master’s preferred)

  • Strong command of English literature, grammar, and composition

  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal

  • Ability to design and deliver engaging lessons that meet the diverse needs of students

  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple classes and responsibilities

  • Ability to assess student learning, provide constructive feedback, and tailor instruction accordingly

  • Effective collaboration skills and a commitment to team-based instruction

  • Familiarity with state and federal education laws, as well as school policies

  • Willingness to implement traditional curricula and instructional models with fidelity

  • Successful completion of applicable Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) within one year of employment

This position reports directly to the English Department Chair and is evaluated annually. It is a full-time position with an annual appointment.
