This opportunity involves working full-time at a client office to support the development of traffic signal requirements (TSR) plans and traffic signal timing (TS) plans for the City of Chicago Department of Transportation.
Candidates should have experience assisting in the production and modification of these plans and prior work experience for a city department of transportation and/or similar experience with this type of traffic signal infrastructure. A strong working knowledge of the placement of signal poles, signal pole foundations, mast arms, cabinets, controllers, and accessible pedestrian signals (APS) preferred.
What You'll Do:
Completes assigned work within the schedule and number of hours provided.
Responsible for preparation and/or modification for select portions of project reports, plans, designs, and calculations.
Develops project quantities and assists with development of cost estimates.
Assists engineering teams with organization and administrative support of design files.
Able to self-sufficiently complete various tasks and duties including but not limited to research, data collection, field investigations, development, and design of projects.
Performs other duties as assigned.
What You'll Need:
Bachelor's degree in Engineering and 2 years of relevant experience, or
Master’s degree in Engineering and 1 year of relevant experience
What You'll Bring:
Prior work experience in preparation of Traffic Signal Requirements (TSR) plans, Traffic Signal Timing (TS) plans, and working knowledge of the layout of traffic signals in constrained urban environment.
Exhibits an understanding of engineering principles relevant to the discipline.
Attains knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite, and familiarity with MicroStation and/or AutoCad or other software.
Designs complex signal timing sequences using computer software, determines location and configuration of proposed signal installations, and reviews and approves designs prepared by staff and/or consultant engineering firms
Conducts field surveys on arterial streets to collect data on traffic patterns, volume, speed, capacity, accidents, and parking and makes recommendations for modifications
Analyzes survey data and recommends the installation of traffic control devices, including traffic signals, stop signs, crossing areas, and directional arrows
Prepares engineering plans for new streets, traffic signal timing, and traffic control devices
Drafts project work plans, specifications and estimates for labor, material, and equipment costs for traffic projects
Reviews signal timing for construction, special events, parades, bridge repairs and recommends measures to ensure minimal disruption and traffic flow efficiency
Investigates traffic complaints, conduct studies, and make recommendations to eliminate problems found
Coordinates traffic signal installation projects with other City departments, agencies, and utilities (e.g., Chicago Transit Authority, Chicago Police Department)
Confers with contractors on plan changes and contract modifications and assists in resolving problems that arise during construction
Maintains project activity journal and prepares engineering reports on the status of projects
Assists in training and providing guidance to lower-level staff
Monitors and operates Central Signal System and Intelligence Transportation Systems
What We Prefer:
Engineer in Training (EIT) certification
Knowledgeable in MicroStation and/or AutoCAD
Knowledgeable in Synchro

The approximate pay range for Illinois is $79,863.05 - $119,794.58. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting.
